Einar Stray Orchestra

Einar Stray Orchestra
Politricks

Like the idea of a dash of Genesis, dollops of Michael Nyman, a soupçon of Beatles and traces of folk? Well the Einar Stray Orchestra have blended all those here in this curious album. It’s the Norwegian five piece’s second and sees them experimenting with different textures, and soundscapes which while technically impressive is sometimes not that memorable.

Starting on a positive note opener Honey is long, dark but lush track, of varying moods and swings. There’s a palpable grimness about this track and it grips to the end. It’s a shame that the band never really reach those heights again. The single and title track while big on the strings and pleasant enough just slips by, as does a good proportion of the tracks here.

Interest picks up with Thrasymachus with its incessant beats and Montreal’s pacey drive is a welcome shot in the arm, with some exquisite harmonies. Qualia is another lengthy track that teeters on the edge but doesn’t quite manage to take the leap.

There’s a lot to admire here as the performances are uniformly excellent in particular the harmonies and vocals, and with a complementary production it sounds fantastic. The main problem is that other than a few tracks it just doesn’t engage very well. There’s a distance in the music that makes it hard to really enjoy and as such it’s a pleasant enough album though maybe not one that will bear up to repeated plays.

The Carnabys

The Carnabys

Their name would suggest they are a retro mod/Who/Jam cover band; others have suggested the Rolling Stones Led Zeppelin, and Queens of the Stone Age as influences. Hmm, opener and debut single, The Pocket is a high-energy thrash that puts The Carnabys at the more energetic end of the indie sound.

Names and disputed influences aside The Carnabys have grafted an album of some charm and diversity with poppers like Come Over To Stay and Keep me on the Run, sitting comfortably with the more intense and complex It’s not the Same.

A complex interplay between the rhythm section drives many of the songs but never gets self-indulgent. The guitars are maybe a little too clean and clinical to really bear comparison with the aforementioned influences though they do beef up on Where I’d Rather Be. Then there’s Jack Mercer’s powerful passionate vocals though they sometimes drift dangerously close towards Tony Hadley’s dulcet tones.

There’s a real sense of vitality about this band and its obvious why they are getting plaudits for their live work. Songs such as the glacial SNIKS and the arena pop of Keep me on the Run are just set to bring down the house.

It is good to hear a band that are really trying to rock out and blow out the speakers, and, whether they’re conscious of it or not, experiment too. It takes two or three listens to get it, but once you are past the initial bombast of the album, you pick up on the subtleties of the songs and nods towards other directions, which makes things very interesting for listener and band alike.

Katy Perry 'tiny penis'

Katy Perry 'tiny penis' paparazzo jibe

Katy Perry has taken to Twitter to speak out about Sydney paparazzo Jamie Fawcett who harassed the singer on a Sydney beach on Saturday, referring to his 'tiny penis' in a post.

Perry named and shamed Fawcett after he affronted her at Obelisk Beach in Mosman demanding she pose for a photo in a bikini and he would leave her alone. 'I was stalked by many grown men today as I tried to take a quiet walk to the beach. These men would not stop as I pleased over & over to let me have my space,' she tweeted.

'They told me to make a 'deal' with them. Give them a bathing suit shot and they would leave me be,' she added.

'This is PERVERTED & disgusting behaviour that should NEVER be tolerated, especially by people who do NOT want this.'

'Australian PRESS: you should be ashamed of you paparazzi & tabloid culture. Your paparazzi have no respect, no integrity, no character. NO HUMANITY'.

Katy then posted her own photos of 'her stalkers'.

Katy singled out Fawcett referring to his 'tiny penis & rather large guy' calling the paparazzo 'a true sicko for taking pictures of us while being naked'.

In 2008, Fawcett was the subject of Australian Story. 'As the self-styled 'Prince of Paparazzi', Jamie Fawcett has established a prominent profile in a tough and often controversial business,' the ABC sets up the show.

'Over the last three years he's been embroiled in legal battles resulting from his pursuit of Ms Kidman.

'Tonight on Australian Story, Jamie Fawcett is facing his critics, and speaking openly for the first time since his latest courtroom drama.'

Fawcett is a former private investigator who is described in the ABC program as 'slightly dodgy' by photographer Peter Carette. 'We don't need him in this town, we don't want him in this town', Carette said.

Carette said Fawcett is the 'negative' in the industry. 'He upsets a lot of celebrities by doing things that we wouldn't do. He would do almost anything to any of the other photographers to stop them getting an exclusive. Certainly we have plenty examples of Jamie causing lots of trouble and he has been a negative to the paparazzi industry per se. He brought a lot of heat and spotlight onto the profession that wasn't there before and there is no need for it.'

One Direction get 'sensual'

One Direction get 'sensual' on the AMAs red carpet

The guys of One Direction are heating up the 2014 American Music Awards!

While chatting with E! News on the red carpet Sunday, the hunky Brit boy-banders couldn't help gushing about their love for one another.

"It's exciting to be here again, and exciting to see you again," Niall Horan told Giuliana Rancic. "Super, super excited," Louis Tomlinson added. "It's great to be here."

The 1D boys will be performing again this year during tonight's AMAs show. When asked which celebs make them nervous on stage, Harry Styles dished, "Everyone. It's an intense room."

Niall added, "I remember last year, Dave Grohl was in the crowd and I remember thinking, 'I'm really nervous.' And we had just met Justin Timberlake for the first time just before we went on. I remember I was really nervous that time."

As for which celeb makes band-mate Liam Payne scream like a 12-year-old girl, Liam turned to Louis and gushed, "You make me scream," before letting out a sexy high-pitched squeal!

"OK, that was quite sensual," Louis responded before Liam grabbed Louis in a big bear hug and dragged him off the E! platform. How cute is their bromance?!

Meanwhile, the guys also opened up about meeting Prince William and Kate Middleton last week at the Royal Variety Performances in London. "I said, 'Conrats on the child,'" Harry said of meeting the pregnant Duchess.

"There isn't a bump," Liam chimed in. "She's so, so tiny. You wouldn't even tell."

"I love her," Niall said. "We were really nervous. We were chosen to kind of meet them when we were arriving. We were kind of put in an odd situation. They were really nice, really nice people. Exactly what we would have thought."

Catch E! Live From the Red Carpet at 6pm PT, and tune-in to E! News on Monday for all the highlights from the AMAs at 7pm and 11pm!
